The Profound Optimism of Eurobodalla Mayor Mathew Hatcher

“The resilience of the Eurobodalla community after devastating bushfires gives me profound optimism. In the face of destruction, neighbours banded together, offering shelter, food, and emotional support to those in need. Volunteers worked tirelessly to rebuild homes and livelihoods, while local businesses united to restore the region’s economy. The natural environment, scarred but not defeated, began its miraculous regeneration, symbolizing hope and renewal. Community initiatives, from fundraising to replanting programs, showcased an unwavering commitment to the future. This collective strength and compassion remind me that even in the darkest times, humanity’s spirit and the land’s healing power inspire enduring hope.”

That's what Eurobodalla Shire Council's Mayor Mathew Hatcher told me when I asked him what makes him optimistic.

Mayor Hartcher’s words refer to the Black Summer bushfires of 2019–2020, which burned over 80% of Eurobodalla Shire and destroyed more than 500 homes in the region. Lives were lost, businesses crippled, and the landscape left unrecognizable. Yet, the community’s response was extraordinary: neighbours opened their doors to one another, emergency services worked tirelessly to save lives and property, and grassroots efforts emerged to rebuild infrastructure and hope. His optimism draws from the human and natural resilience on display - evidence that even in moments of immense devastation, communities can rise together stronger and more united than ever.

Commenting on Mathew's leadership, James Horton told me, "We need more Matthews! He is a wonderful human being and an inspiring person. He embodies a kind of grounded optimism that is infectious rather than gratuitous. And curious."
