Optimism Amongst Nigerian Youth: An Optimistic Spirit Reflected in Research
Nigeria strikes a contrasting note with its vibrant and optimistic young generation in a world where youth are often painted as disillusioned or disengaged.
Despite numerous challenges, Nigerian youth display an upbeat attitude and unshakable belief in a better future, as evidenced by recent research.
A recent report by the Nigerian National Bureau of Statistics, titled 'COVID-19 Impact Monitoring', provides enriching insights into the mindset of Nigerian youth. According to the study, 92% of young individuals in the wealthiest consumption quintile expressed confidence that they could achieve their dream job. Interestingly, this optimism was not confined to the well-off sections of society; 63% of youth in the poorest quintile echoed a similar sentiment.
The NBS survey across 1,950 households goes beyond merely quantifying optimism. It offers a nuanced understanding of this age group's aspirations, employment outlook, and attitudes towards vaccination. It underlines the readiness of Nigerian youth to strive for their dreams and their understanding of the importance of health in achieving these goals.
The African Youth Survey of 2020 supports this perspective, involving 4,200 interviews across 14 African nations, including Nigeria. The survey revealed that 81% of young Africans feel optimistic about their personal future.
This optimism among Nigerian youth can be attributed to several factors. They are deeply embedded in a rapidly evolving digital economy, with Nigeria's tech sector being one of Africa's fastest-growing domains. The flourishing landscape of startups, tech hubs, and digital innovation creates many opportunities for young Nigerians, infusing them with hope for a prosperous future.
Higher education also plays a pivotal role in fostering optimism. A 2020 survey by Stutern, a Nigerian internships startup, found that 67% of Nigerian students were optimistic about their post-graduation job prospects. This reflects a strong correlation between increased access to education and optimism among the youth.
However, acknowledging the optimism among Nigerian youth should not overshadow their challenges. High poverty levels, unemployment, inequality, corruption, insecurity, and inadequate infrastructure remain predominant.
Despite the challenges they face, Nigerian youth possess remarkable optimism, resilience and strength. Their optimistic, creative and innovative spirit, coupled with a strong desire to effect change, has the potential to drive significant transformation if given the necessary support.
Several initiatives could be undertaken to bolster Nigerian youth and enable them to actualize their potential. These include:
- Enhancing investments in education and skills training
- Creating employment opportunities
- Addressing the root causes of poverty and inequality
- Combating corruption and insecurity
- Improving infrastructure
In conclusion, the research conducted by the NBS, among others, underscores the commendable optimism prevalent among Nigerian youth. This positive mindset is a testament to their resilience amid adversity, a powerful resource that could considerably aid Nigeria's socio-economic development if appropriately channelled. Their lived reality of optimism is a survival tool and a strategic approach to personal and communal progression. By investing in its youth, Nigeria would not just address present needs but securing a promising future for its people.
