Islamic Optimism: Embracing Hope and Positivity Through Faith

Islamic Optimism: Embracing Hope and Positivity Through Faith
by Mughees Qureshi

We live in a fast-paced world, which makes it easy for negative thoughts to catch up to us. Collectively, these acts make us lose sight of the blessings around us.

However, Allah has taught Muslims to remain optimistic in adversity.

Our Prophet Muhammad remained optimistic, hopeful and patient in the face of any challenge. Optimism is not just a facade; rather, it is found in Islam's roots.

Islam encourages us to be optimistic, hopeful and positive with the help of our faith.

The True Power of Hope in Islam

Islam is a religion that encourages its followers to remain hopeful in all situations. The Quran reminds us in various instances that Allah is merciful, forgiving, and compassionate.

In Surah Al-Inshirah, Allah says;

Surely, with hardship, there is ease.

[Al-Quran, 94-5]

Although the verse may be a few words long, it is a powerful reminder. It helps us remember that ease will always follow if life gets tough. The verse is also a guarantee from Allah himself that there is a solution to every difficulty. Similarly, with every struggle, there is relief. Because of these words, Muslims can continue their sense of positivity in every phase of life.

Putting Your Trust in Allah's Plan

The concept of Tawakkal remains a constant in Islam. It is the belief whereby every Muslim man and woman puts their faith and trust in Allah's plan. One of the Hadith beautifully explains the concept of Tawakkul.

Suhaib reported that Allah's Messenger () said:

"Strange are the ways of a believer for it is good in every affair of his and this is not the case with anyone else except in the case of a believer for if he has an occasion to feel delight, he thanks (God), thus there is a good for him in it, and if he gets into trouble and shows resignation (and endures it patiently), there is a good for him in it."

[Sahih Muslim 2999]

Gratitude is the Key to Positivity

Allah has given a solution for Muslims who find it hard to see the positivity in their lives. The key to staying optimistic and hopeful is to practise gratitude. Gratitude is a way of thanking Allah for his blessings and for all the good in your life.

In the Quran, Allah says,

Remember, your Lord proclaimed: "I shall give you more if you are grateful, but if you are thankless then surely My punishment is very great."

[Al-Quran,14-7]

Whenever humans focus on the good things in their lives, whether big or small, they naturally develop the instinct to have a more positive outlook. Once we develop the habit of practising gratitude, we will be constantly reminded of Allah's blessings.

Being Patient and Perseverant

These two phrases are often used synonymously yet, they hold very different meanings.

Being patient means accepting, tolerating, and absorbing whatever challenges life throws you without losing faith or being anxious.

On the other hand, perseverance means to continue to struggle even if there are challenges ahead. Optimism is the key to perseverance. Islam teaches Muslims to practise patience and perseverance to maintain optimism and positivity.

Nobody's life is smooth and stress-free. Everyone faces some kind of ups and downs. However, with the help of these two virtues, we can easily spend our lives and face difficulties with dignity.

In Surah Al-Baqara, Allah Says'

"O you who believe, seek courage in fortitude and prayer, for God is with those who are patient and persevere."

[Al-Quran, 2-153)

This verse is yet another reassurance from Allah himself that He will always stand with the patient and perseverant. Multiple verses like these in the Quran and Sunnah help us maintain an optimistic and positive attitude despite hardships.

How to Cultivate Inner Peace Through Positivity

When we go through tricky turns of life with optimism, we slowly cultivate inner peace. It transforms our perspective and can help us see a more positive outlook on life. Here are a few ways on how you can cultivate inner peace through optimism:

  • Always view your difficulties and trials as a stepping stone to something good. Think of it as a growth factor because these trials teach life lessons.
  • Search for the hidden benefits of those difficulties.
  • Accept and face all the hardships with gratitude and patience.
  • Connect your optimism with spiritual beliefs and trust in Allah. This connection will make you more resilient in life.
  • Accepting optimism allows you to reflect deeply on yourself, helping you with personal growth and development.

Conclusion

When discussing Optimism in Islam, we must know it is more than just being hopeful.

Being optimistic is a way of life for many Muslims in different corners of the world. Once we accept the words of the Quran and Sunnah, we work towards adopting a mindset that believes in faith, trust, patience, and gratitude. Such a mindset not only helps us face life's challenges head-on but also helps us be closer to Allah.

The next time you encounter any difficult phase of your life, remember these verses and hadith and ask for guidance from Allah.
