The Power of Exploration and Optimism: A Conversation with John Hagel
John Hagel, a remarkable thinker and Silicon Valley veteran, is a passionate advocate for exploring opportunities and inspiring progress. With over four decades of experience at the forefront of innovation, John has authored transformative works like The Power of Pull and The Journey Beyond Fear. His insights into serendipity, curiosity, and optimism have influenced leaders worldwide, and his role as a member of the advisory committee at The Centre for Optimism adds depth to his connection with our mission.
In this episode of The Optimism Man Podcast, Victor Perton asked John the signature question: "What makes you optimistic?" John's response reflects his thoughtful and inspiring worldview:
"Many things have shaped my optimism over time for sure. The thing that gives me the most optimism is looking at long-term trends in the world. If you pull back not just for a year or 10 years or a hundred years, but a thousand years, and see the extraordinary progress that has been made around the world, even though there have been dips along the way, the progress continues. That's the basis for some profound optimism that's going to continue. And then also being surrounded by optimistic people. One of the reasons I've been based here in Silicon Valley for over 40 years is because the optimism of the people in Silicon Valley drew me. They're always focused on opportunity, reinforcing my optimism and so many things."

The Power of Serendipity
A significant part of the conversation revolved around the concept of serendipity, which John describes not as mere luck but as the result of intentional choices and actions. "Serendipity," John explained, "is unexpected encounters with people or things that could prove very helpful to you in whatever you're trying to do."
John emphasised that we can shape serendipity by being deliberate about the environments we inhabit and the behaviours we adopt:
- "If you're living in a small village where everyone knows everyone else, there's going to be very little serendipity versus if you're living in a big city where you're constantly running into people you've never met before."
- "In the business world, if your day is scheduled from breakfast until dinner, there's no chance for serendipity. But if you leave some free time to wander the halls or attend conferences, you open the door to unexpected opportunities."
He shared a compelling example of an entrepreneur who attends conferences globally almost daily but does not enter the session rooms. Instead, this individual waits in the lobby, engaging passers-by in spontaneous conversations that often lead to fruitful and surprising outcomes. "It's these unexpected interactions," John noted, "that often provide the most valuable insights."
The Passion of the Explorer
Another compelling topic was John's concept of "the passion of the explorer," which he believes is vital for navigating a rapidly changing world. This passion, he explained, is characterised by a drive to have more impact, a love of confronting challenges, and a desire to connect with others.
"People with the passion of the explorer," John said, "are excited about achieving more and more impact in a specific domain. They're thrilled by unexpected challenges because those challenges are opportunities to learn and grow. And their first instinct is to ask, 'Who else can I connect with to come up with a better answer faster?'"
John also highlighted the role of collaboration in exploration: "If you're just exploring as an individual, you might make progress, but when you come together with others who share your passion, you'll come up with better answers faster." He discussed forming small, passionate groups—what he calls "impact groups"—where members support one another through setbacks and challenge each other to aim higher.
