Angus Reid Institute on Canadian Optimism for 2024

The Angus Reid Institute's survey for emotions about 2024 reveals a prevailing sense of optimism among Canadians, reflecting a blend of hope and pragmatism as the nation faces global and national challenges.

Angus Reid Institute Survey

The Angus Reid Institute's survey shows that about 70% of Canadians believe 2024 will be better than 2023. Optimism is highest among the youngest (aged 18-34) and oldest (55+) Canadians, while the middle-aged group (35-54) appears less optimistic.

Women (71%) are slightly more optimistic than men (68%). Atlantic Canada is the most optimistic region (73%), while Albertans are the least optimistic (64%).

The survey also finds a split in opinions regarding the Canadian economy, with nearly half (48%) expecting a better year and the other half (52%) anticipating it worsening.

Maru Public Opinion Poll

The Maru public opinion poll aligns with these findings, showing that most Canadians, around 70%, believe 2024 will be a better year than 2023. This positive sentiment is especially strong among the youngest and oldest Canadians, while those in the middle age group are more disenchanted. Women are slightly more optimistic than men. Regarding regional differences, optimism is highest in Atlantic Canada and lowest in Alberta, with Ontarians falling in the upper-middle category.

Online Study by The Logit Group and Narrative Research

An online study by The Logit Group and Narrative Research with 1,230 Canadians conducted in December 2023 shows two-thirds of Canadians are optimistic to some extent about 2024 for themselves personally, while just over half feel pessimistic about the world's state. Optimism about the state of the world is highest in Ontario and lowest in Quebec. In contrast, personal optimism is highest in Quebec and lowest in Atlantic Canada.

Regional Differences in Optimism

The surveys reveal distinct regional differences in optimism among Canadians:

  • Atlantic Canada: Most optimistic
  • Alberta: Least optimistic
  • Quebec: Exhibits the highest personal optimism at 67% but the lowest optimism about the state of the world at 38%.

Why would Atlantic Canada be the "most optimistic" region?  Several factors foster a positive outlook here. Historical resilience, stunning nature, strong communities, economic growth, innovative solutions, and a vibrant cultural identity all contribute to a sense of hope and agency. Though subjective and not without challenges, Atlantic Canadians' optimism stems from facing difficulties together, celebrating shared successes, and actively shaping a brighter future.

Conclusion

These surveys collectively depict a Canadian population that, while recognizing existing challenges, leans towards a positive and resilient outlook for 2024. This optimism varies across age groups, genders, and regions, highlighting the nation's adaptability and hopefulness in uncertainty.
