Magnetic Optimism: Blue Sky Podcast's Bill Burke Meets Victor Perton
At The Centre for Optimism, we've always believed in optimism's transformative power. In the latest episode of the That Optimism Man Podcast, our founder, Victor Perton, welcomes Bill Burke, Founder of The Optimism Institute and Host of the Blue Sky Podcast, for an insightful conversation about optimism's role in leadership, health, and resilience.

As always, Victor kicked off the episode with a question central to our work:
Victor Perton: "You can't visit the Centre for Optimism without being asked our fundamental research question—what makes you optimistic? Is your optimism shaped by your life experiences, your faith, your mindset, the facts, or the people around you?"
Bill's heartfelt response set the tone for the entire episode. He attributed his optimism to "all of the above," especially his upbringing. He shared how his mother, "one of those default-to-positive people," shaped his optimistic outlook with her unwavering belief in brighter tomorrows. Reflecting on his father's leadership in business, Bill added, "I believe all leaders have a lot of optimism. No one wants to follow someone who's going to take them someplace worse."
Bill's optimism wasn't just a temperament, as he revealed. His work with The Optimism Institute has deepened his appreciation for optimism as a fact-based and actionable approach to life. "The world is getting better," Bill explained. "It always has, and it will continue to if we stay optimistic. But optimism isn't passive—you have to play a role in it."
A Lifetime of Magnetic Optimism
Victor introduced the concept of magnetic optimism, describing it as "an optimism so tangible and a vision so compelling that people want to reach out and touch it." Bill embodies magnetic optimism, inspiring action and belief wherever he goes.
His personal anecdotes, like being voted "Class Optimist" in high school, reveal a lifelong commitment to positivity. From his early career working with media visionary Ted Turner to his current mission with The Optimism Institute, Bill has always paired hope with action, making optimism a cornerstone of his leadership and storytelling.
Optimism's Role in Health and Progress
The conversation also explored the deep connections between optimism and health. Victor and Bill discussed groundbreaking studies showing how optimism can lead to longer life expectancy, better recovery from illness, and improved mental well-being. Bill emphasised that optimism is not just about "seeing the glass half full"—it's about fostering resilience, staying hopeful, and acting to make the world better.
Reflecting on his concerns for younger generations, Bill warned against narratives of doom that discourage action. "If young people believe the world is going to end in 30 years, why bother? That's when progress stops," he said. Optimism, he argued, is essential for inspiring the action needed to address challenges like climate change and inequality.
Stories of Hope and Action
The podcast was brimming with powerful stories from Bill's work. He shared the impact of featuring individuals tackling society's most challenging problems on his Blue Sky Podcast. One story stood out: a listener inspired by an episode about reconnecting the homeless with their families used that inspiration to search for her missing brother, bringing hope to her family in her mother's final days.
A Shared Vision for Optimism
Bill and Victor believe that optimism is a catalyst for progress, a solution to life's most pressing questions, and a guide for navigating challenges. Victor summed it up best with The Centre for Optimism's guiding principle: "Optimism is the answer to life's most pressing questions."
Tune In for Magnetic Optimism
This conversation is a must-listen for anyone seeking inspiration, positivity, and practical insights into the power of optimism. From the personal influences of their optimistic mothers to their shared commitment to spreading hope and action, Victor and Bill remind us that optimism isn't just a mindset—it's a movement.
