Therapeutic Optimism

"Conscious, deliberate optimism, particularly in the face of what might feel like overwhelming adversity, is crucial to success." (Dona Tantirimudalige)

By Victor Perton

Therapeutic optimism is a mindset or approach that emphasizes a positive outlook on the potential outcomes of therapy or medical treatment. It involves believing that the therapeutic or medical interventions being used will lead to a positive outcome and that the patient can improve their health or well-being.

This approach recognizes the importance of hope and positive thinking in the healing process. It encourages patients to have a positive attitude and to believe that they can overcome their challenges and achieve their goals. Therapeutic optimism also helps to build trust between patients and healthcare providers, as it fosters a collaborative and supportive relationship that can help patients to stay motivated and engaged in their treatment.

It is important to note that therapeutic optimism is not the same as denying or ignoring the challenges and limitations of therapy or medical treatment. Instead, it involves acknowledging these challenges while maintaining a positive attitude and focus on the potential for positive outcomes.

Norman Vincent Peale in The Tough-Minded Optimist

"Again and again in the Bible references are made to joy, faith, optimism. “These things,” Jesus said, “have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.” (John 15: 11) Take optimism, therefore, as medicine for the body, mind and soul. Optimism is based on faith, hope and expectation; and there is therapeutic value in the mere act of hoping. The Bible recognizes this also in a moving passage: “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God; for I shall yet praise Him who is the health of my countenance, and my God.” (Ps. 42: 11 ) It is to say that if you have hope in God and expectation, it will show on your face as health and vitality."

An optimistic outlook though, by lowering stress, can be very therapeutic and healing. When you learn to see the bright side of life, you’re more at peace, which is better for your health and well-being. Optimism is optimal for our health, both physically and emotionally.”

"The science is clear—an optimistic attitude will lead to a whole host of health benefits, including better cardiovascular health, lower risk of stroke, easier weight control, a stronger immune system, healthier blood pressure, improved blood sugar levels, better exercise tolerance, enhanced sexual performance and lower incidence of depression and anxiety disorders."
