"Nurturing Optimistic Girls Making a Contribution"
A Commentary by Victor Perton
"Nurturing Optimistic Girls Making a Contribution" - what an excellent headline on International Women's Day 2025!
"We are committed to nurturing girls who will be genuine contributors to the world, feel they can make a difference, and have a great sense of optimism about their contributions," said Natalie Charles, Principal of St Catherine's School.
Optimistic girls grow into women who shape the world with confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of purpose; St Catherine's School is looking to lead the way in nurturing this transformative optimism. When girls are encouraged to see challenges as opportunities and to believe in their ability to make a difference, they develop a mindset that fuels optimism, invention, and modern leadership. Optimism is a catalyst for contribution; girls raised with an optimistic outlook will naturally uplift others and create a better future for their communities. Natalie Charles’ vision for nurturing girls to be genuine contributors is precisely what the world needs; young women who embrace optimism as a driving force will be the changemakers of tomorrow.
By coincidence, I spent this week with the graduate intake to the Attorney-General's Department, doing precisely what Natalie advocates—big topics around a central large table. This open, in-depth discussion fosters optimism, collaboration, curiosity, and, most importantly, the confidence to contribute meaningfully. It was inspiring to see emerging leaders engage with optimism, share wide-ranging perspectives, and shape ideas that will influence the future.
