AkzoNobel’s 2025 Color of the Year is a yellow, True Joy

AkzoNobel’s 2025 Color of the Year, True Joy, is a sunny yellow that epitomises optimism, hope, positivity, and energy.

This vibrant yellow not only brings visual delight but also aligns with the deeper symbolic meaning of the colour - representing a forward-looking mindset and emotional resilience. As a fan of yellow and orange, which I see as the colours of optimism, True Joy™ stands out as more than just a decorative element; it becomes a statement of emotional transformation, creating spaces that uplift and inspire.

In the psychology of colour, yellow is linked to joy, excitement, and confidence.

As Peter Dowdall writes, yellow symbolises optimism and creativity, stirring a sense of originality and enthusiasm.

As Donatella Versace said yesterday, "When there is so much darkness in the world – with this collection, I wanted to bring colour, light, optimism, and joy – we have never needed it more."

Heleen van Gent, Creative Director of AkzoNobel’s Global Aesthetic Center, said, “In this rapidly changing world, it’s easy to feel uncertain about our next steps. But change creates an opportunity for imagination; a chance to create something even better. With our new Color of the Year and ColourFutures 2025 palettes, we want to inspire consumers to celebrate their roots and creativity and embrace the optimism of moving forward in their homes and spaces.”

I wholeheartedly endorse Heleen’s desire to embrace the optimism of moving forward in our homes and spaces. Yellow, and True Joy™ in particular, invites us to create environments that not only reflect our creativity but also foster hope and positivity for the future.

What future possibilities do you see emerging from incorporating yellow into your spaces?
