"The most important thing in life is a sense of purpose; having that sense of purpose brings joy and happiness. This requires both hope and optimism, as hope is the belief that tomorrow will be better than today, the confidence that you have the agency to make it happen, and the ability to come up with multiple pathways to reach your goals.

"Optimism, in turn, is a key contributor to hope and joy, as it helps us to see the world in a positive light and to believe in the possibility of good things happening. Ultimately, hope, optimism, and joy are closely connected, and all are essential for a healthy, happy and meaningful life."

That's what Kathy Archer told me when I asked her about the connection between optimism and joy as we at The Centre for Optimism are collaborating with The Art and Science of Joy to celebrate their Year of Joy.

Kathy Archer is a Canada-based Leadership Development Coach.

The year of Joy will open on 17 January and to my delight will open with the Superpower of Optimism.

If you live in Melbourne, Australia come and join us for breakfast on the 21st January.  (Book via Eventbrite)

When asked what makes her optimistic.  Kathy told me, "What makes me optimistic is feeling the growth in my clients. When they have ah-ha's, find they are better managing their leadership and their lives, it's so rewarding! When leaders learn to lead with their strength of character, it makes me optimistic that we can change leadership worldwide. The more leaders leading with integrity, the better place the world will be to live our lives, raise our families and commit to our communities!"
