Destructive Optimism?
by Victor Perton

Tony asked me "Victor, I am interested in your views of what destructive optimism might look like?"

The question was in the context of Donald Trump's inauguration address where he said,  "I return to the presidency confident and optimistic that we are at the start of a thrilling new era of national success. A tide of change is sweeping the country. Sunlight is pouring over the entire world, and America has the chance to seize this opportunity like never before.”

The term "destructive optimism" is a contradiction in terms—it contradicts the very essence of optimism, which is inherently constructive. At its simplest, optimism is an expectation that good things will happen and that challenges can be overcome. It is the belief in a better future.

A person who is destructive and optimistic may indeed display traits of optimism, but it is not the optimism itself that is destructive. Instead, the issue lies in other character traits, such as arrogance, recklessness, or a lack of insight. When paired with realism and appreciative inquiry, optimism becomes a transformative force that uplifts, inspires, and empowers individuals and organizations to thrive. It is not optimism but the absence of balance, foresight, or accountability that leads to adverse outcomes.

Don't forget that people can claim to be optimistic, or their speechwriters may insert the word into their speeches. For me, it's fascinating to observe leaders like Biden, Sunak, Albanese, and Trump frequently declaring statements like, "I have never been more optimistic about xxxx" Yet, they rarely extend the question to their followers or countrymen, asking, "What makes you optimistic?" Such a question would deepen the conversation and empower people to reflect on their sources of hope and inspiration, creating a shared vision for the future.

At its core, optimism is a tool for thoughtful action, creative problem-solving, and building a better future. Optimism turns challenges into opportunities, fosters collaboration, and generates innovative solutions. Authentic optimism is never destructive; it is essential for overcoming adversity and achieving meaningful success.
