Strategy and Optimism: Through the Pandemic and on to a Brighter Future

by Victor Perton

The Centre for Optimism's second web-based survey is entitled "Strategy and Optimism: Through the Pandemic and on to a Brighter Future" and commenced in March 2020.

390 people from at least 260 organisations from 17 countries,  experienced in strategy creation have completed the survey.

We have kept the survey form open and you are welcome to complete it.  Several strategists thanked us for the thought-provoking questions which sharpened up their strategy review.

Our earlier research based on asking strategy experts one-to-one had led us to a view that good strategy relies on optimism.  We waited in anticipation for the results of the on-line survey.

Should the purpose and objectives of strategy be optimistic in nature?

We asked "Do you believe that the purpose and objectives of strategy should be optimistic in nature?"

Eight-five percent of the respondents said Yes.

What would you say about the relationship between optimism and good strategy?"

We asked the open question, "What would you say about the relationship between optimism and good strategy?"

Please read the responses at "What would you say about the relationship between optimism and good strategy?"

What would you say about the relationship between optimism and good strategy?

Have you worked in optimistic strategy creation?

To this question, "Have you worked in optimistic strategy creation?", almost 62% said yes and 34% said no.

There is a substantial gap between those who believe strategy should be optimistic and those whose organisations have an optimistic strategy creation process.

We may work on the wording of this question for the next survey or split the question as questioning the question was the most significant part of the 5% who said "other."

How are you and your leadership using optimism to drive execution of your strategy?

We asked those who had worked in an optimistic strategy process and were using optimism to drive strategy, "How are you and your leadership using optimism to drive execution of your strategy?"

Those answers are shared at "How are you and your leadership using optimism to drive execution of your strategy?"

Are your stakeholders optimistic about your strategy?

We asked those who believe they are working in an optimistic strategy environment, "Are your stakeholders optimistic about your strategy?"

66% thought yes.  20% didn't know.

When we look later in the survey on measurement of optimism, not sure how accurate the perception of the 66% is...

What methods have you employed to get stakeholders optimistic about your strategy?

To those who answered yes, to the question "Are your stakeholders optimistic about your strategy?", we asked "What methods have you employed to get stakeholders optimistic about your strategy?"  Read Selected Answers to "What methods have you employed to get stakeholders optimistic about your strategy?"

Have you measured optimism?

We asked those who believe they are working in an optimistic strategy environment, "Have you measured Optimism?"

Nearly 72% said no.  Roughly 22% said yes.

Wasn't there an expert who said something about measuring....

How do you measure optimism?

Asking "how do you measure optimism", revealed another gap in the tool-set for most organisations.   Many answered by saying "Good question!" Common answers asked us the question, "How do you measure it?"  There seems to be a clear gap in market knowledge.

Are you reviewing your strategy in the light of the pandemic?

We asked "Are you reviewing your strategy in the light of the pandemic?"

14% have already completed a strategic review.  65% are in the process of a review.
