Dr Richard Munang's Adamant Optimism

We must, therefore become adamant optimists. With this, we can not only become solution providers, but we can do what I call stubborn opportunism and where we seize and turn difficulties into opportunities, we seize challenges and turn them into opportunities.

The world becomes a better place as we drive transformational change for people and planet. This is what makes me an optimist. This is what makes me an adamant optimist, and this is what makes me believe in stubborn opportunism.  All of us should become adamant optimists.

Richard is the UNEP Africa Regional Climate Change Programme Coordinator and author of "Making Africa Work Through the Power of Innovative Volunteerism"

This is why I am an optimist.

"The path is made by walking."

"You must act as if it is impossible to fail."

These African proverbs put in perspective why I am an adamant optimist, and will always remain one.

The world may seem to be in a terrible mess today, as we've seen over the past eight months or so, but what makes me optimistic is the people of the world, because I understand.

I know that with a mindset change, we can start to see ourselves, regardless of where we are, as solution providers to every challenge that we face in the world.

Because let's face it, challenges are disguised opportunities.

Life is not a place of ease, and therefore every challenge that we see, we must be able to have that mindset of devising solutions, a mindset that sees a challenge as an opportunity to test our skills, because every adversity, courage will be the seed of equal or greater benefit.

There's no problem on this planet that we cannot solve when we come together. Innovative volunteerism in the African continent is showing this. It is showing that you inspired can be able to do wonders, inspired to carry our climate action solutions using locally available material and developing non-carbon intensive, innovative climate action solutions that are turning their passions to profits.

Be it solar drier that is helping reduce post-harvest losses, or foil briefcase that is replacing charcoal, or by fertilizer that is helping to rejuvenate soil chemical processes to function well.

These foundational elements provide a sustained future, explicitly by this year, and this gives me hope. This makes me optimistic because these youth are paving the way, showing the way they're inspired, and if they believe in themselves, they can do wonders.
